RUSD and UC Riverside Announce Strategic Expansion on STEM Education

RIVERSIDE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT AND UC RIVERSIDE ANNOUNCE

STRATEGIC EXPANSION ON STEM EDUCATION

 

RIVERSIDE, Calif., May 22, 2026 — The Riverside Unified School District (RUSD) and University of California, Riverside (UCR) announced today that they are no longer seeking to develop the proposed STEM Education Center on the UCR campus while both institutions work together to expand and strengthen STEM learning, college readiness, and community-supported opportunities for students across all RUSD schools.

RUSD and UCR share a long-standing partnership focused on preparing students for the jobs of the future. This decision reflects both partners’ assessment of  how STEM education can reach the greatest number of students across the district. 

 

“Leadership has changed in both organizations, and with that comes an opportunity to think more expansively about our approach to partnership in service of Riverside’s students,” said RUSD Superintendent Sonia Llamas. “At the center of this decision are students across our district who are already excelling, imagining, creating, and preparing for their futures. Our focus is on connecting the dots across our schools, partners, and community so the talents of our students are met with the tools, support, and opportunities they deserve.” 

 

During this period, UCR and RUSD will convene a multidisciplinary working group to assess opportunities for expanded STEM programming, while also exploring broader ways to connect students across the district with UCR’s academic resources and expertise. The group will include leaders from relevant disciplines, including UCR’s School of Education, School of Business, College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, College of Engineering, and College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. The working group will also include representatives from both organizations with expertise in career pathways, college readiness, and admissions, with a focus on strengthening the supports that help students prepare for and successfully transition into university experiences.

 

“UCR remains deeply committed to our partnership with Riverside Unified and to expanding access to high-quality STEM education for students throughout our community," said Chancellor S. Jack Hu. “This collaborative move will allow us to work with RUSD to explore how we can leverage the experience in STEM education to broaden opportunities across more schools and ensure our efforts align with the evolving needs of students and educators.”

 

Both institutions reaffirm their commitment to working together to advance educational opportunity and innovation for students across the Riverside community.

El DISTRITO ESCOLAR UNIFICADO DE RIVERSIDE Y LA UNIVERSIDAD DE CALIFORNIA EN RIVERSIDE ANUNCIAN LA AMPLIACIÓN ESTRATÉGICA DE LA EDUCACIÓN STEM

 

RIVERSIDE, Calif., 22 de mayo de 2026 — El Distrito Escolar Unificado de Riverside (RUSD) y la Universidad de California en Riverside (UCR) han anunciado hoy que ya no tienen intención de llevar a cabo el proyecto del Centro de Educación STEM en el plantel de la UCR, aunque ambas instituciones seguirán colaborando para ampliar y reforzar la enseñanza de las disciplinas STEM, la preparación para la universidad y las oportunidades respaldadas por la comunidad para los estudiantes de todas las escuelas del RUSD.

El RUSD y la UCR mantienen una colaboración de larga data centrada en preparar a los estudiantes para los empleos del futuro. Esta decisión refleja la valoración que ambas partes han hecho de cómo la educación en STEM puede llegar al mayor número posible de estudiantes en todo el distrito.

 

«El liderazgo ha cambiado en ambas organizaciones, y eso nos brinda la oportunidad de plantearnos de forma más amplia nuestro enfoque de la colaboración al servicio de los estudiantes de Riverside —afirmó Sonia Llamas, superintendente del RUSD—. En el centro de esta decisión se encuentran los estudiantes de todo nuestro distrito que ya están destacando, imaginando, creando y preparándose para su futuro. Nuestro objetivo es tender puentes entre nuestras escuelas, nuestros socios y la comunidad para que el talento de nuestros estudiantes cuente con las herramientas, el apoyo y las oportunidades que se merecen».

 

Durante este periodo, la UCR y el RUSD constituirán un grupo de trabajo multidisciplinar para evaluar las oportunidades de ampliar la oferta de programas STEM, al tiempo que exploran formas más generales de conectar a los estudiantes de todo el distrito con los recursos académicos y la experiencia de la UCR. El grupo contará con líderes de disciplinas relevantes, entre ellas la Facultad de Educación, la Facultad de Empresariales, la Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Agrícolas, la Facultad de Ingeniería y la Facultad de Humanidades, Artes y Ciencias Sociales de la UCR. El grupo de trabajo también contará con representantes de ambas organizaciones con experiencia en itinerarios profesionales, preparación para la universidad y admisiones, centrándose en reforzar los apoyos que ayudan a los estudiantes a prepararse y a realizar con éxito la transición a la experiencia universitaria.

Ambas instituciones reafirman su compromiso de trabajar en conjunto para promover las oportunidades educativas y la innovación en beneficio de los estudiantes de toda la comunidad de Riverside.
