Bell Schedules - Legal Requirements
SB 328, signed by the Governor in 2019 and implemented in the fall of 2022, is based on over three decades of research on teen health, sleep patterns and brain chemistry. It’s goal is to align school start times with the biology of teens. Research demonstrates that when the school day starts later, students are healthier and perform better in school.
- High schools shall begin no earlier than 8:30 a.m.
- Middle schools shall begin no earlier than 8:00 a.m.
- Allows districts to offer zero periods
- Adds CA Education Code 46148
