RIVERSIDE - At the January 21, 2021, General Meeting of the Board of Education, Dr. David Hansen, Superintendent of the Riverside Unified School District, announced that he would retire at the end of this school year. His career in public education spans 33 years and he has served as Superintendent in Riverside USD since 2014. His retirement will be effective on July 1, 2021.

Board President Thomas R. Hunt II expressed gratitude for Dr. Hansen's service, commenting, “Over these past 7 years, David Hansen has enhanced operations, and has advanced the Board of Education’s goals more than any other Superintendent who served before him. His leadership successfully advanced education delivery. RUSD has the highest graduation rate, 97% among the 16 largest Districts in our State and across the Inland Empire. His commitment to employee relations and enhanced professional training is proof that all employees are appreciated and a part of the advancement of RUSD. I know I speak for the entire Board of Education and many in our community, that David Hansen is one of the finest individuals I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. His character, empathy for others and his unparalleled leadership are inspiring and appreciated. We will greatly miss David, yet he leaves RUSD better set for today's challenges and the opportunities of tomorrow. ”

The Board of Trustees will determine the process to fill the superintendency and will share the plan with staff and the community when more information is available. This work to find the district's next leader will begin immediately.
