On Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at the Riverside Unified School District Board of Education meeting, three new student members took the official oath to join the Board for the 2017-2018 school year. Michelle Boulos of Poly High School is the first student to serve, taking her spot alongside the elected members of the Board. Also taking the Oath of Office was Monserrat Alvarado of Arlington High School, who will serve from December 2017 through February 2017, and Bryn Kolterman of Riverside Virtual School, who will be on the Board from March 2017 through May 2017.
Chosen from the population of seniors at RUSD’s eight high schools, the sitting Student Board Member is recognized at meetings as a full member. They will receive all materials except those distributed in closed sessions, and their preferential votes are cast before the official Board vote and will not affect the final outcome.
Any student attending a Riverside Unified School District high school, who met the eligibility requirements for extracurricular activities and will be a senior for the 2017-2018 school year, was eligible to apply to be a Student Board Member. Students who had applied for the office were interviewed by current, publicly-elected Board members Brent Lee and Dr. Angelov Farooq. This process will take place again in the spring of 2018 for Ramona, King, STEM, Lincoln or North high schools.
