SB 328, which was recently signed by the Governor, is based on over three decades of research on teen health, sleep patterns and brain chemistry. It’s goal is to align school start times with the biology of teens. Research demonstrates that when the school day starts later, students are healthier and perform better in school.

The changes will take effect in the fall of 2022. More information to follow.

  • High schools shall begin no earlier than 8:30 a.m.
  • Middle schools shall begin no earlier than 8:00 a.m.
  • Allows districts to offer zero periods
  • Implementation shall begin no later than July 1, 2022
  • Adds CA Education Code 46148
